Born in France in 1975, Stephane Joannes attended L'Ecole Superieure des Arts Decoratifs in Strasbourg, France. Joannes works mainly in the medium of oil on canvas and his first show in 1997 was of female nudes in black and white tones, giving his work the look of contemporary black and white photography. The sense of contrast and texture in the nudes is strong yet very sensual.

After a stay in La Havre, Joannes turned his attention to painting the boats and tankers he continuously viewed. The spectacular horizontal paintings that have emerged from this sojourn are quite unique and have captivated collectors from around the world.
